unemployment or retirement

By Terry Savage on July 24, 2020 | Wild Card

My husband like 22 million others laid off mid march because of covid19. We tried almost 3 weeks to get through to unemployment to no avail. We had an alternative available to us because of his age 67. He opted for full retirement with social security and Medicare. He will probably not be called back to work. No mind. I wonder how many other older folks have went through our situation making the hard choice to loose unemployment all together ?

Terry Says

I think that many people made that decision. But unless you get a pension from that company, if he was laid off he is still eligible for unemployment benefits –as long as he is able to certify that he is still looking for work. If he is willing to do so, you should apply again — and get back payments to he date he was laid off. Only a pension from your former employer — not SS — counts against you in the formula.
But yes, in answer to your question, many many people have had their life plans rerouted because of the current Covid situation.
