Ask Terry Questions WEP and the Military

WEP and the Military

By Terry Savage on January 24, 2024 | Wild Card

Hi Terry Savage. While examining my Social Security earnings statement I noticed that the reported earnings for the years that I was serving in the US Army were lower than I expected them to be. Is that an example of the “Windfall Elimination Provision”?

Terry Says

No, the WEP is a reduction of Social Security benefits at retirement for those who receive a pension from a public service job.
If you think there is a mistake in your earnings statement you should first get some kind of verification (previous income tax returns or 1099s from those years) and then immediately contact Social Security.
Unlike other public service pensions, a military pension is NOT subject to the WEP.
