Who can help clean up my financial mess?

By Terry Savage on January 12, 2024 | Credit/Debt

I suffered depression for 30 years and couldn’t take care of our finances. Now I’m in complete remission. Our tax lady didn’t file many of our past taxes.. so we owe at least $30,000.. I gambled and I’m in very high credit card debt now ( my hubby doesn’t know yet) I need a heloc or heloan.. we have no mortgage. We make about 80,000 year in retirement. The problem I have I don’t trust anyone to help or even get the loan. Plus I have no life insurance I just turned 65. We’re very trusting and always get screwed. Please point me in the right direction. I’m ready to get my financial life together.
Thank you!

Whew, that was quite a headline — and the story is even tougher! I have an answer for you.
Immediately contact the National Foundation for Credit Counseling at 800-388-2227. That will put you in touch with the nearest member agency. Set up a meeting with them. Bring all your paper — whatever you have from the IRS, and all your latest credit card bills.

Believe me, you can trust their advice. They are a non-profit, typically free or very low cost.
Don’t procrastinate. Do it in the morning and set up the appointment. Then write to me again after your first appointment and tell me what happened. There IS a way out of this.
