CARES ACT/UNEMPLOYMENT FOR THOSE WHO WERE ABOUT TO START A JOB BUT COULD NOT DUE TO COVID

By Terry Savage on May 06, 2020 | Wild Card

Thank you Terry, enjoy your segments on WGN. My daughter who is 19 had two jobs lined up for the summer while she was home from college. Neither one will now happen due to Covid as both employers are currently closed. Similar situation, my twin boys (16) both had summer jobs lined up but again, those employers are closed due to Covid. More concerned about my daughter who was working to pay for college but can any of my children receive any type of assistance? I believe not directly through unemployment but are they eligible to receive assistance through the Cares act and if so then how? Thank you for all your hard work and valuable information. Greatly appreciated.

Terry Says

Sorry – -but loss of a proposed or hoped-for job doesn’t count for unemployment assistance! Your two younger children will generate a $500 check for stimulus payment on your tax return. And you should check with the student assistance office at the college immediately to ask for more financial aid for fall because COVID has changed family finances. (Read next week’s column for more on that.)
