ILLINOIS UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIM
MY GRANDSON FILED CLAIM FOR 2 PART TIME JOBS. MOST RECENT WAS SHORT DURATION. HE WAS DENIED. FILED 2ND CLAIM FOR APPROX 18 MONTH JOB, WAS AGAIN DENIED. WHAT SHOULD HE DO?
Terry Says
Well, he must have earned a certain amount in “covered wages” to qualify for unemployment in any state, including Illinois. And it’s a shame he filed for the short duration job first. That probably eliminated him from claiming for the other job. He can try to re-file — but first he needs to check to see if he qualifies based on earnings.
To qualify you must have earned as much as $1200 in the most recent 12-month base period, and at least $440 OUTSIDE of the base period quarter in which your earnings were highest.
So if he didn’t have enough covered earnings he wouldn’t qualify. Now if you think he DID earn that much, he can file an appeal. Or try to start an entirely different claim. But given the mess at IDES, this does not look promising!
