Unemployment For an employee and self employed

By Terry Savage on September 08, 2020 | Wild Card

Hi Terry, I have listened to (and took) your advice over the years, especially regarding refinancing. Thanks.
I am a self employed Personal Trainer and also employed by a small gym. My gym hours are basically down to almost zero because my clients don’t want to use a gym setting. I am working hard to enhance my own business by offering Zoom training. My Zoom options are bringing in the money right now. I had one really good week at the gym and that knocked me out of unemployment. Now, I am back down to almost zero at the gym. I don’t know who else I should ask. I am currently under employed. Should I refile for unemployment? My Zoom training is going well.

This is a tricky question. (Are you MY Zoom trainer, by the way?!) I know that’s probably happening to her!
Here’s the thing: If you get ANY payment from your employment at the gym, it will impact your unemployment benefits. And with the IDES system in Illinois so messed up, it’s hard to get back in again! Try certifying again — saying you have no income (or minimal income) from your job — and see if you can get your benefits back.
If you were unemployed completely from the gym, then you could get the self-employed PUA benefits but would have to disclose that income from self-employment.
So you’re sort of trapped in the middle — and I think the idea is to get the benefits you earned from working at your job and not working now.
