OK, first decision: do you really want to stay in the house, or are you better off selling it? I ask because there will obviously be more repairs in the future, and if you can’t afford this one maybe you’re better off selling now and putting the cash away safely. Something to think about!
If you want to get money out of the house and are a senior (over 65 at least) you might consider a reverse mortgage (www.Reversemortgage.org), which would give you a check a month as long as you live in the home. But that might not be enough to cover future costs such as insurance, property taxes, and repairs. They take all those things into consideration when allowing a Reverse Mortgage.
There may be some community or state grants for the disabled. It depends on where you live. So I suggest you do an online search for the term “grants for the disabled” and add your city and state.
And if you’re in doubt about whether this makes sense, first contact the National Foundation for Credit Counseling at 800-388-2227. This is not just for people who are in credit “trouble.” They will help you review your entire financial situation and help you decide whether staying in the house makes sense.
