Social security overpayment

By Terry Savage on September 16, 2025 | Social Security

SSA is deducting an amount from my check. I reported wages by mailing my paycheck stubs to the local SSA office on Alameda Blvd in Fort Worth. I assumed they adjusted my benefit amount when they got my paychecks

Later on they sent me a letter saying I have a $14,000 overpayment. I mailed them my check stubs, they say they never got them. Do I have any recourse?
Even now I get an email from them asking me to report my wages. I’m past full retirement age now

I used to work at SSA too. It’s weird. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,

Wait — I’m not quite sure I understand your situation. You’re collecting benefits. Did you start before full retirement age? And they did not offset the benefits because of your earnings? And now you’ve received a “clawback” letter?

Typically SS reduced your benefits by $1 for every $2 earned (currently the earnings limit is $24,300) –if you collect before full retirement age. Are you saying they did not reduce your benefit, overpaid you and now they want it back?

If so, you have little defense. Keep track of what amount they are deducting to make up for the overage — or it could continue forever!!

If I didn’t get that correct, please write back to the email you receive saying your question has been answered.
AND, PS —

NEVER send anything original/important to SS — even by registered mail. It is guaranteed to get lost!
