My ss# appeared on the dark web according to Zander.

By Terry Savage on September 12, 2025 | Wild Card

There is conflicting information on the web on the following 3 questions.
1. The 3 credit bureaus tell me I must put a lock on my social security number & call SS. They say they don’t do that. SS told me l can self-lock@ MyE-Verified. But online it states they only monitor my benefits, to detect any signs of identity theft. Apparently this company is not part of the Social security administration but part of Homeland security- part of the government. So it seems nowhere can I lock my #. Please advise what to do.
2. Do I need to contact the IRS to notify them that my ss# was stolen & appeared on the dark web? I am 82 yrs old& retired. Do I still have to contact them &, then generate an IP pin #?
3. Do l need to contact Medicare or my Blue Cross supplemental plan? I already contacted 3 credit bureaus & all financial institutions, my pension annuity firm, credit cards ,& brokerage firms. Not sure why there is conflicting info regarding my 3 questions. Thank you for your help. I so appreciate it.

Wait. Don’t Panic! EVERYONE’s SS is on the Dark Web! Absolutely everyone!

For sure, you want to lock your credit report at each of the three bureaus. Instructions are in that article.

Don’t worry about informing SS — I assume you’re receiving benefits, and you don’t want to mess around!
Then keep track of your Medicare claims online on your account. If you notice a charge from a provider you don’t recognize, that is the time to notify Medicare.
