Debit Cards risks

By Terry Savage on December 04, 2025 | Wild Card

My husband refuses to use a debit card even though most businesses do not accept checks anymore. He read a newspaper article in which you were interviewed, and he can’t remember the details, but there was something about vendors debiting a card for more than the actual purchase price. I would like to get a debit card without an account, but I would like to know more about the drawbacks to using one to purchase things like groceries and clothes. Also, do gas stations do the same type of thing? Since checks are going away, is it better to use cash? Thank you for your time and attention.

I never wrote that! So let’s set the record straight. And a debit card is a great way to manage spending — since if the money is not in the account, you can’t spend it! Just keep the PIN safe — and never write it on the card! Only use it in secure locations, and that includes gas pumps, but not casual ATMs.

Or if he prefers, he can use a credit card — earn miles or points — and pay it off in full every month. Find a rewards card that might tempt you here: https://www.creditcards.com/rewards-cards/

Many businesses refuse to handle cash any more, so he will have to use one or the other!
