Ask Terry Questions SS survivor benefit

SS survivor benefit

By Terry Savage on May 18, 2026 | Social Security

My husband passed away in 2018 at the age of 58. My children received benefits up to age 18 or when they graduated from High School if that was before their 18th birthday. I was told at the time that I can collect a “widows” benefit when I’m 60 (in four years).
I work full time and could retire at age 60 with a public (IMRF) pension. I’m trying to figure out the best time to start collecting the widow’s benefit, which will determine when I retire as I need the supplement from SS to make ends meet. I know it will be lower if I collect at 60 vs 67. I also know that I can switch to my full benefit at age 67 if it will be higher. I doubt it will be higher based on what my husband earned at the time of his death vs. what I earn.
I’m not entirely confident that the social security people will give me the best advice. Is there someone you can recommend that helps people review their options to make the best decision? Thank you for your help!

It costs $49 and it is well worth it. They’ll search your SS records and that of your late spouse, and help you decide on the best course of action.
