Hospital collections
ust year I had surgery at Advocate South Suburban Hospital. There was a $188.00 copay that I was trying to pay off monthly. i asked to not let this go to Collections and they said it wouldnt. In the meantime I was diagnosed with Cancer and had to immediately undergo 2 surgeries and see a multitude of specialists for my eye. Then a second surgery. Things got a little crazy as I don’t have family and had to rely on a friend for help and driving. I happened to go into my Advocate account and…they sent the $188.00 to collections. I want to correct this but not sure how to go a about it as know the collection agency bought it at a lower amount. What do I do to resolve this.
Thank you

This is sad, because it is a relatively small amount. But once it goes to collections, there is not much you can do to remove it from your credit report.
But you should contact the collection agency and tell them your story. Ask if they can forgive the debt. (They won’t!) Then ask them if they could take a one-time payment for a smaller amount. If they make this offer, take it. But ask them to send it to you in writing by mail (not email) and confirm that by making this payment they well take the balance out of collection.
If they won’t make a deal, you can tell them to stop calling you. You have rights under the law. But given this amount, I’d suggest getting this entire thing behind you.
And you should check your creditreport online at one of the major bureaus to make sure this is the only problem you have. Read this: https://www.terrysavage.com/identity-theft-update/
