Credit card debt

By Terry Savage on October 26, 2026 | Credit/Debt

My husband just passed. Due to an aggressive form of cancer. Due to a swift decline & some confusion on his mental health. I wasn’t aware if certain things. Am i responsible for two credit cards that I was unaware he had ? They were in his name ? Please help death of a loving strong man. Who declined so fast is shocking to many who knew him & loved him. Thank you Sincerely slightly lost

I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. Yes, while you may not be a signer on that credit card, his estate is technically responsible for repayment. However, may card issuers will write off the balance at death. But you have to deal with this carefully.

Did he have a will, or a revocable living trust? Have you discussed your entire situation with a probate attorney?

I’m sorry for the delay in responding as I was out of the country for two weeks and am just catching up. If you still haven’t dealt with all the legal matters, please write back to the email you receive saying “your question has been answered.” Include your phone number. I’ll try to point you in the right direction.
