Medigap Attained Age Pricing vs Community Pricing
My wife and I are in our early 70s. We both have Medigap Plan G. Our carrier uses Community Pricing. Premiums are going up quite a bit in 2027. Are there real advantages with Community Pricing over Attained Age Pricing. Its my understand that Community Pricing plans charge the same premium for all ages while Attained Age costs increase as you get older. However, since a carrier can change plan premiums each year, if an Attained Age plan is much less currently than a Community Pricing plans charge, would it be better to go to the Community Pricing plan? How can we trust that Community Pricing plan premiums will not increase based on age and I’ll still pay the same premium as a 65 year old when I’m 85?
Terry Says
This is a “heads I win, tails you lose” kind of situation. YOu can be sure that regardless of the pricing strategy, the premiums will rise as medical costs rise. Starting out with an “attained age” policy gives you lower initial premiums — as you are younger and less likely to need care. Eventually those premiums will rise sharply. And at this point you may not qualify to switch plans.
