Ask Terry Questions Medicare Enrollment

Medicare Enrollment

By Terry Savage on November 05, 2026 | Insurance & Annuities

My situation – turning 65 in January 2027, wife still actively employed with group health insurance benefits for the foreseeable future. I know I will remain active as spouse under her employer policy. I assume there is nothing I need to do until this situation changes and I will then need to enroll in A & B and a supplement. Am I correct and is there anything I’m missing or need to consider at the present? Obviously brand new to turning 65 and all that entails so I just want to make sure I don’t screw it up the first time. Love the Wednesday show with John! Thanks.

You are correct. As long as you are fully covered by your spouse’s insurance (and as long as her work insurance doesn’t require you to sign up — so ask them), you don’t have to do anything.
If they don’t require you to sign up, then don’t — because even signing up for the free Part A would invalidate her right to contribute to a Health Savings Account, if her company offers one.
