medicare supplement deadlines to avoid medical underwriting

After reading your article on Monday, questions regarding Medicare supplements;
1. Is it possible to buy Medicare supplement outside of open enrollment?
2. If I decide to purchase a Medicare supplement policy – after my first year of coverage, during open enrollment, can I do so without medical underwriting?

Terry Says

1. If you are just enrolling in Medicare you have 6 months to buy a supplement. Otherwise you must buy one during Open Enrollment.
2. If you wait longer than a year to purchase a supplement, you will be asked for medical underwriting and may not qualify for the best (Plan F) supplement). Don’t play games with this — to save on a few months’ premiums. This is your entire future health coverage that we’re talking about!
