Ask Terry Questions Parent disability

Parent disability

By Terry Savage on November 17, 2024 | Wild Card

How can a parent survive on disability with 4 children? Help with college? Help with sports? Help pay car ins? I’ve got 2 in college, one in high school and one in Elementry. I don’t get a lot on disability and I’m 39 yrs old

Whew — that is an insane load and an almost impossible question to answer. At age 39, and with four children, two in college, I assume you’ve been at this for a while.

First, I assume there is another parent, and that you’ve exhausted all resources to get that parent to contribute to the support of the children?? Yes, that would take an attorney — but might be worth the effort.
Second, I assume you’ve gone to your state website to check out every possible benefit — from food to housing to healthcare.
Third, I assume you’ve gone to the high school principal (and college financial aid offices) to explain your situation and get some relief on those extra bills.
Fourth, I assume you know the income limits for your disability benefits, but are trying to earn at least up to those limits in some way (though I have no idea when you’d have time to do that!) just to supplement your disability.
Fifth, I dont know how/why you are disabled, but if it was the result of an accident, I assume you found a great attorney.

I try never to ASSUME in making my responses but to always ask for more information by email. But in this case, I’m astounded that you’ve come this far living on disability. So basically, I can only applaud you — and your children — for making it this far! If you want to respond to the email you receive saying “your question has been answered”, I’d be interested to hear more about your story.
