Social Security Divorced Spouse Benefits

By Terry Savage on May 27, 2026 | Social Security

Hi Terry
I know that I qualify for SS benefits of my ex-husband (I was married for over 10 years, divorced 14 years ago and my ex-spouse is over 62). I am still working full time but am over the FRA. Can I take my ex-spouse’s ss benefits while I’m working now and then switch to mine when I retire in a few years or reach age 70? Or, if I take his, am I locked in to his for the rest of my life. I think my benefits may be higher.
Thank you

Terry Says

As long as you are at FRA, and not remarried, you can receive half of your ex-spouse’s benefit at the spouse’s full retirement age — even if the ex is not yet collecting.

BUT, I’m going to suggest that you do the actual calculations at
MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com. It costs $49, and is well worth it, because they can give you specific numbers and the best claiming strategy to maximize your eventual benefit if you wait until age 70.
