Taxes filed by someone other than us
Tony, my husband, tried to file our taxes this evening only to find that someone had already used our Social Security numbers. Therefore, our filing was rejected.
He is trying to reach the IRS now. I listen to you on WGN all the time and thought I would ask your advice. Thank you.

Ugh — that is the point of the new PIN program the IRS just instituted. Read this column.
I actually contacted the iRS on your behalf, and here is what I was told:
“Likely, they’ll need to file a paper return and attach the ID theft form. They’ll probably each want to consider getting an IP PIN. See https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/taxpayer-guide-to-identity-theft.”
That doesn’t sound like much help — but it should trigger an IRS investigation. I know this has happened to others, and it was a mess to straighten out. Prepare yourself for a long hassle. And keep good records, screen shots, of everyone you talk to.
If worst comes to worst, contact the IRS ombudsman at 1-877-777-4778.
