Ask Terry Questions Medical bills

Medical bills

By Terry Savage on November 01, 2015 | Credit/Debt

I recieve Social Security Disability,.I applied for Medicaid from the State of Illinois and I was working a part-time job which I no longer have. I keep recieving bills from a debt collector for the medical bills, which I can’t pay until I’m released from the docter to go back to work. What do I about the bills and can they mess with my Social Security for payment?

Terry Says:  No, the private bill collectors cannot “mess” with your Social Security.  But you need some help to get them to stop.  I would suggest calling the National Foundation for Credit Counseling at 800-388-2227.  That will connect you to the nearest local office.  Explain your situation.  Have the bills handy — and the info about the debt collector.  I’m betting they will make a call on your behalf.  There are laws against debt collector harassment.  Please write back and let me know what happens.
