You very well could be — especially if he used your name in the application.
First step — go to www.annualcreditreport.com
Get your free report from each of the three credit bureaus — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Check
To see if any cards are listed that you do not recognize. If they are on your credit report, you are definitely liable!
(You might also be able to check your husband’s credit report separately if you can answer the questions required. It could reveal more details and current balances.)
But that’s not the end of it. If you live in a community property state, you may be liable anyway!
This is a serious breach of marital trust.
I’ll give you two paths. First call the National Foundation for Credit Counseling at 800-388-2227. They can give you free advice specific to your state of residence.
Second, contact a divorce attorney in your state. If a lot of money is involved — and especially if you file a joint tax return — you might want legal protection.
