Ask Terry Questions credit card

credit card

By Terry Savage on October 22, 2026 | Credit/Debt

I have incurred some credit card debt for medical expenses not covered by insurance and I’m paying this off on a monthly basis. It dawned on me that since I’m 80, what if I were to die before I get it done? I have one son. Will this debt fall on him? I am generally in good health but have had some issues this year and at this age, one never know. I live alone, own my house and am a Florida resident

Terry Says

Credit card debt is considered “unsecured” debt, so your son would not be liable. But they could sue your estate for payment. Your son would have to deal with that claim when settling your estate, selling your home.

May I suggest you contact the non-profit National Foundation for Credit Counseling at 800-388-2227 to review your situation. There may be some protection available to you as a senior. Please write back and let me know what they say.
