Ask Terry Questions Closing a card

Closing a card

By Terry Savage on October 13, 2026 | Credit/Debt

I have a zero balance on a chase card. The issue is I need to pay a $99 yearly fee. I’d like to close account.

Check your credit report first. You never want to close your oldest (longest-held) credit card because of the impact on your credit score. Longevity of credit counts for a lot!

But if you have several credit cards of the same vintage, it’s ok to close the card. Ask the company to report it as closed “at the request of the card-holder”.
