Ask Terry Questions credit card

credit card

By Terry Savage on October 13, 2026 | Credit/Debt

While I have historically paid my monthly credit card charges off monthly, I recently incurred some unexpected medical expenses not covered by Medicare. So I have run up a few thousand dollars on my mastercard, am paying on it monthly and hope to get done by year’s end. But I’m 80 and while generally in good health it occurred to me, what if I should die before it’s paid off? Does this fall to my son? It’s nothing he incurred. I own my home, live alone, am a Florida resident

Your heirs do not have direct responsibility for your credit card debt when you die. But your “estate” does. Most card issuers will not try to collect small amounts from an estate.
Your heirs should simply write “deceased” on the bill. Or call the card issuer and tell them the owner passed leaving no cash in the estate to pay debts. That’s likely true, despite home ownership. I wouldn’t worry about it.
